You are pregnant! It is absolutely incredible and can have your life turn in unexpected ways! Among other things, you are trying to figure out how you can give your baby the healthiest start possible. As women, we are faced with a ton of different decisions that we have to make while pregnant. Don’t worry, we are here to help you a step on the way: we created a 5 easy step guide to have a green pregnancy.
1. Stay close to the source
Water – Since now you will be drinking for two, staying hydrated is key. Using a purification system assures you’ll get a steady stream of clean water by eliminating contaminants in your drinking supply. Another way to get clean water is to avoid drinking from plastic bottles, which can seep harmful toxins into the drinking water
Healthy Eating: If you don’t recognize an ingredient on a food label, your body probably won’t either. Adopting a more ‘green’ approach to your diet means getting rid of pesticides, additives and GMO’s found in foods. When you shop for food and you wonder which items are the most important to buy organic, use the ‘dirty dozen’ and the ‘clean 15’ lists as a reference, that categorize respectively the fruits and vegetables that are the most and least contaminated by pesticide use. 2. Natural beauty hacks
Small things such as changing your daily habits can prevent exposure to many common environmental hazards. A strong-smelling chemical, especially if it triggers morning sickness, is a red flag. So, “Green-up” your beauty regimen by applying mineral make-up with no preservatives and fragrances, for example. Try not to use hair products that have parabens and phthalates. Instead, look for products containing essential oils.
3. A Green home
Bad news: your favourite scented plug-ins, air sprays and candles are loaded with a number of toxins to produce that artificial aroma. We would recommend using unprocessed deodorizers, like aromatherapy diffusers, which are far better for both you and baby. You can even make your own air freshener by boiling cinnamon sticks and citrus peels in a pot, making every day smell like a holiday!
4. Reuse, reduce & recycle
Be open to using some hand-me-down items from friends and family members, instead of buying everything brand new. Some of these items are only used for a short period of time, so why not give them a second life? With a new baby, you will find a lot of items are disposable but there are quite a few items that you can buy as reusable, such as: diapers, baby bottles, nursing pads, etc.
Also, don’t forget to recycle on a daily basis.
5.The “Greenest” way of transportation
It all begins with a small step. On top of lowering your carbon footprint, walking has proven itself to be an ideal prenatal exercise. So, take a walk and breathe some fresh air as you start your journey of a green pregnancy.
